In it, one could hear a great deal of fort spinnung and repetitious melodies. Since there are no words, the music has to tell the story, and the length makes it more in depth. I also enjoy the piece because of its length. One could clearly hear the polyphony with the multiple instruments. I found this arrangement particularly enjoyable, because without words it has been said that the mood of the music itself is easier to understand – without words the music is more palatable. It seems like the music is consistently building onto something bigger and better. In an analysis on this piece of music, one could say that overall it is very intense. It sounds like each one is a slight variation on the last.) sequencing, a strong sense of harmony, use of basso continuo, and unity of mood (the mood remains powerful yet sweet throughout.) Common themes in the era of music include, homophonic or polyphonic textures (throughout the entire piece - voilins can be heard playing different melodies over bass,) an emphasis on the beat (a consistent, very fast-paced beat throughout the piece,) repetitious melodies (the opening melody is repeated several times throughout the piece. Without lyrics, it is more difficult to give an in depth analysis. This arrangement fits, as Vivaldi helped to popularize this type of instrumentation. The particular piece selected for this assignment – “Trio sonata in D Minor (La Follia)” was arranged for two violins and basso continuo, making it an instrumental piece. He never had a great deal of money, but lived comfortably once his publications became popular, and he once boasted that “he could compose a concerto faster than a copyist could ready the individual parts for the players in the orchestra” (allmusic). Through this, others in Europe began to hear about his talents. One could see his dedication to music, as his first job was teaching violin at a local girls’ orphanage in Venice. As with many young men at the time, he studied priesthood and eventually became an ordained priest. ![]() In terms of Vivaldi’s musical upbringing, his father was a violinist at the Cathedral of Venice, and “probably Antonio’s first musical teacher” (allmusic). A highly influential individual amongst his other Baroque-peers, his fluid rhythms and famed melodies came to define Baroque instrumental music. According to Allmusic, Antonio Vivaldi is widely recognized as “the master of the Baroque instrumental concerto” – a movement that he helped to popularize.
